Young Master Bai — Chapter 63
Chapter 63: The Heaven's Way Alliance's Meeting
The yao clan had already reached Dongling, and naturally, a meeting was also convened in Lin’an City. Shortly after noon, the ten strongest of the Heaven's Way Alliance gathered in the Bu Kang Pavilion within the Unknown Truth Sect.
The Unknown Truth Sect was originally located in the old imperial palace of Lin’an City. After the Li clan of Chang’an destroyed the Zhao clan of Western Liang, the place fell into the hands of cultivators. Later, it was occupied by the Unknown Truth Sect, and personally named Busi City [lit. Not a city] by Feng Shiqi.
This city-within-a-city was constructed entirely by royal standards, with countless palaces and pavilions. The Bu Kang Pavilion was once where the false emperor and his ministers discussed state affairs. Feng Shiqi later connected all three levels of the hall, turning the side walls into tall bookcases filled with classic manuscripts of every dynasty. Upon entering, one was greeted by towering walls of books reaching three stories high, while nine golden carved dragons coiled near the ceiling, now serving as brush racks for hanging calligraphy brushes. The setup proclaimed the Unknown Truth Sect’s principle: truth above imperial authority.
The Heaven's Way Alliance had no emperor. In the pavilion there was only one round table with ten seats around it. Each sect master sat upon arrival, with no precedence or hierarchy. Feng Shiqi often said — such a fine round table would be wasted without food. Thus, every meeting became a banquet. Last year the centerpiece was a whole roasted lamb, while this year it was an entire suckling pig. Though it was meant to be a weighty discussion on the fate of the realm, in his hands it looked more like a year-end family feast.
The sect masters were all figures of great dignity — none could behave like that unruly monkey gnawing at bones. They always sat upright, ignoring the wafting aroma with much effort.
Feng Shiqi, however, never denied himself. He casually picked up a piece of crispy roasted pig skin and placed it into his bowl, and began the meeting as if making small talk. “The Heavenly Wolf clan has been wiped out. Who do you think did it?”
His lack of decorum was nothing new, and the sect masters were long accustomed to ignoring it. Since he raised the topic of the Heavenly Wolf clan, the head of the Myriad Treasures Hall, Lin Xuan, spoke with doubt. “Didn’t the Great Snow Mountain send word claiming it was the work of some mysterious descendant of the Yao King?”
Bai Chen was meticulous in his actions, ruling his clan with both power and persuasion. To the Heaven's Way Alliance he had sent a clear explanation. Yet to cultivators, that explanation was unconvincing. An old man dressed like an oil seller rolled his eyes. “Master Lin, do you take us for fools? Yao usually attack with bloodline talents and physical hunts. Never mind the exquisite swordsmanship needed to slay the entire Heavenly Wolf clan overnight — even ordinary sword techniques are awkward for them.”
This was the Oil Seller, one of the Seven Commons of the Wandering Immortal Alliance. Though a Wandering Immortal, he still kept the appearance of an old man. Even his artifact was a bamboo oil cask. To outward eyes, he was indistinguishable from an ordinary street vendor. Place his oil jars on the street, and even a Golden Immortal [high rank immortal cultivator] would not suspect he was a Wandering Immortal.
The Seven Commons were equally careless about decorum. Apart from Feng Shiqi, he was the only one still eating. Yet whenever the master of the Endless Longevity Academy picked up a snack, he would drop his chopsticks and sit upright, doing everything in direct opposition to the academy master.
Cultivators needed teachers to pass on the Dao, and the Endless Longevity Academy bore the task of testing children’s aptitude and sending them to private schools every year. Though cultivators would later join different sects, their first teachers were always from this academy. For this, the Endless Longevity Academy was honored as the teacher of all cultivators. Its current master, Bai Hangshou, was even called “Mr. Peach-and-Plum.”
Those from the academy were considered the most orthodox of cultivators, wearing Daoist robes, bearing fly-whisks, their long hair bound immaculately under Daoist crowns, detached from worldly matters. Bai Hangshou was no exception. Faced with the Oil Seller’s provocation, he simply ignored it and instead asked Azure Heaven Manor, responsible for investigating the incident: “Can you confirm all the wolf yao died under the sword of one person?”
Azure Heaven Manor was famous for its artifices. Its master, Qiu Xiaohan, had lost an arm as a child and replaced it with an artifice limb to cultivate against the odds, reaching Wandering Immortal despite incomplete meridians. In the cultivation world, he was a legend of perseverance. Yet he himself was quiet, his handsome face as expressionless as one of his artifices. Seated in his wheelchair, he answered by tossing out several memory stones. “My artifice mice recorded the scene. See for yourselves.”
The Red Fox clan had immediately sealed off the Heavenly Wolf camp after discovering the massacre. What they hadn’t expected was that Azure Heaven Manor’s artifices had long reached the point of indistinguishability. The rats scurrying among the corpses were actually disguised artifice mice, and they had already captured the scene for Qiu Xiaohan.
Now the memory stones projected it all: the blood-stained snowfield, the countless wolf corpses with eyes still wide open in death. The atmosphere grew heavy. Even the silent abbot of Little Thunderclap Temple sighed, “Amitabha.”
All ten were elite human cultivators, their eyes sharp. Lin Xuan studied the bodies carefully and nodded. “Hundreds of wolf yao, slain in a single stroke regardless of cultivation. Such mastery, such a weapon that ignores the yao’s iron hides — it can only be one of the top human swordmasters.”
Bai Chen had claimed the act was a frame-up by the Yao King’s descendant, but yao could not possess such swordsmanship. Yet by his side was Li Wuming, a man who would risk everything for his Dao companion.
The Heavenly Wolf clan had shared weal and woe with the Great Snow Mountain for a thousand years, without serious conflict. For humans to kill them was unsurprising, but Bai Chen’s act of total extermination was ruthlessly cold. If the new Yao King could destroy his own people over mere disagreements, how much more merciless would he be to unrelated humans? The Heaven's Way Alliance welcomed the clan’s fall, but could not allow such a vicious Yao King to grow stronger.
As for Li Wuming, if he could forsake right and wrong for love, then he could not be trusted.
Feng Shiqi paused in mid-bite, offering no opinion, and instead turned to the most well-informed, Bai Hangshou. “The Endless Longevity Academy holds the records of all cultivators. How many in this world could wield such swordsmanship?”
Bai Hangshou smiled faintly. “Alliance Leader flatters me. To have such mastery, one must not only be a Wandering Immortal, but also have supreme skill with the sword. In all the world, there are only five.”
Feng Shiqi had expected more than Li Wuming alone, but five was still a surprise. He leaned forward with interest. “Oh? Tell us.”
“The head of the Hidden Wisdom Sect has always been known as the foremost swordsman of the world—”
That had once been accepted wisdom, but now sounded almost mocking. Before Bai Hangshou could finish, Bu Tiange gave a cold snort. “I know my limits. My cultivation is still far from the Wandering Immortal realm.”
The others knew Bu Tiange’s true level. Bai Hangshou did not press him, continuing: “Headmaster Bu is still young, of course it cannot be him. But the previous head, Fu Hongye, was unmatched with the sword.”
Fu Hongye, the former headmaster of the Hidden Wisdom Sect, once the alliance leader of the Heaven's Way Alliance, and sworn brother of Feng Shiqi. Some even whispered he was the incarnation of Chang’an’s dragon vein, a great spirit of emperor rank. If he had returned, wiping out the Heavenly Wolf clan — or even the whole Great Snow Mountain in a night — would have been easy.
For years, both the Hidden Wisdom Sect and Feng Shiqi had claimed Fu Hongye was long dead. Even when the sect was challenged, he never appeared, so most believed it. Yet some cultivators remained certain the dragon vein of Chang’an would never die so easily. Bai Hangshou was clearly among them.
Bu Tiange saw the insinuation and his expression grew colder. “The previous headmaster has already fallen. Do you mean to suspect the dead?”
“The Hidden Wisdom Sect has always been upright, and Headmaster Fu was a hero who gave his life for the Dao. Naturally it could not be him.”
With Bu Tiange’s perpetually cold face, none could read his emotions. Failing to probe further, Bai Hangshou smoothed over the matter himself. “Aside from Headmaster Fu, there was the Sword Immortal Bai. A thousand years ago, he was the foremost swordsman, slayer of yao kings and clans. His disciple, Li Wuming, has also attained Wandering Immortal cultivation.”
The title of “greatest under Heaven” had long stirred the dreams of countless cultivators. At this, Yue Xingshi, the mistress of Illusory Moon Villa, could not hold her tongue. “How many number-ones can there be? Between Sword Immortal Bai and Headmaster Fu, who was truly the greatest?”
Illusory Moon Villa was a sect of women, its techniques designed to aid their Dao companions. For centuries it had endured through intermarriage with top cultivators. But this generation’s mistress, Yue Xingshi, was a martial fanatic. She cared nothing for “adding fragrance to sleeves.” Her life was duels and seclusion, and even her son Lin Kaitian was fed by his father with a bottle.
Her question was one many had long wondered. But Sword Immortal Bai never appeared in public, and Bai Hangshou could only shrug. “That I do not know. Perhaps Mistress Yue should summon Headmaster Fu to duel him?”
Clearly, he was intent on dragging Fu Hongye into it. Feng Shiqi finally put down his chopsticks with a cold laugh. “My elder brother has been in the earth for centuries. You may dislike me, but you needn’t dig up his grave just to push me from the alliance leader’s seat.”
Fu Hongye had been a man of great virtue, his policies always grounded in reason. Feng Shiqi, however, was unruly and unreasonable, forcing the sects to swallow their pride. Naturally, they missed the freedom of old.
Indeed, Feng Shiqi was bound by no etiquette. His blunt words stripped Bai Hangshou of pretense. The academy master could only laugh dryly and backtrack. “The Alliance Leader misunderstands. I merely admire the former leader’s style and wish I could see him once more.”
Fu Hongye had claimed to give his life for the people. But had the Heaven's Way Alliance not split over his non-human nature, he would not have fought alone. Now that he was dead, only longing remained. Feng Shiqi sneered and dismissed the subject. “Who are the other two?”
With Feng Shiqi pressing him, Bai Hangshou dared not dissemble. “There was Yao Jianke, disciple of the Dao Lord, who shared a master with the Demon Lord and Sword Lord. He vanished overseas, but if alive, such mastery would be within his reach.”
This figure had long been forgotten. Feng Shiqi’s eyes flickered, while Bu Tiange bristled as the suspicion once again touched his sect. “Five suspects, and two are from the Hidden Wisdom Sect.”
Bai Hangshou showed little concern. “The Hidden Wisdom Sect has deep roots, with countless strong ancestors.”
The words sounded like praise, but in light of the sect’s decline, they stung. Bu Tiange’s face darkened. Yet some remained focused on the matter itself. Qiu Xiaohan, impatient at Bai Hangshou’s pause, lifted his eyes. “And the last?”
“That would be you, Master Qiu.”
Who would have thought that Qiu Xiaohan’s words would turn the suspicion back onto himself? Even Feng Shiqi doubted Bai Hangshou’s claim, grabbing Qiu Xiaohan’s wooden prosthetic arm and saying, “Look at his wheelchair and his hands, then say that again.”
Bai Hangshou showed no fear of doubt. He shifted the fly-whisk resting on his wrist to the other side and slowly explained, “Of course, Master Qiu cannot do it himself. But the Azure Heaven Manor recently produced a batch of artifice swordsmen. Every cultivator has their own habits, so no matter how well-trained, a team of sword-wielders will leave wounds distinguishable to the experienced eye. Artifice men are different. Every move is controlled precisely by Master Qiu. If many wielded swords as one, it would not be surprising.”
The artifice swordsmen were a top secret of the Azure Heaven Manor, never shown to outsiders. That the Endless Longevity Academy knew of them showed how frightening their network was. Yet his explanation was reasonable, and all eyes turned to Qiu Xiaohan.
Half his body was already artifice, but Qiu Xiaohan’s expression did not change. He simply replied with three decisive words: “Not me.”
He denied destroying the Heavenly Wolf clan but not the existence of artifice swordsmen. Clearly, the Azure Heaven Manor truly possessed methods rivaling a Sword Immortal. The sects grew silently wary.
Bai Hangshou, whether intentionally or not, distanced himself after planting suspicion. “I only listed those who meet the conditions. As for who it truly was, that is for the Alliance Leader to decide.”
Among the five suspects he listed, Fu Hongye was publicly dead, Yao Jianke’s fate was unknown, and Qiu Xiaohan had no reason to target the Heavenly Wolf clan. That left the Sword Immortal’s line as the most suspicious.
The Oil Seller had always opposed the Endless Longevity Academy. Now, seeing him deflect and seemingly defend the Great Snow Mountain, he snapped harshly: “Two dead men and a cripple — you’re just trying to shield that fox demon. I say it was Li Wuming. This talk of mysterious yao is just an excuse.”
The creed of the Wandering Immortal Alliance was simple: oppose whatever the Endless Longevity Academy supported, and support whatever it opposed. Feng Shiqi didn’t take this bickering old man seriously. He only tapped the table thoughtfully. “All these years, whenever there was a Heavenly Tribulation, the Endless Longevity Academy was the first to verify and record it. By rights, no Wandering Immortal should have escaped your eyes.”
A cultivator’s tribulation was loud and dramatic. If a Wandering Immortal had arisen, it would not go unnoticed. Thus, there was no other suspect. If, as Bai Chen said, this was the work of a yao faction, then one of those five must be working with the Yao King’s descendant.
Fu Hongye and Qiu Xiaohan, both of noble origin, would not consort with underground forces. The Sword Immortal’s lineage hated the Yao King too much to be likely. As for Yao Jianke, his most promising disciple was long dead, so he should have no heirs. Could it really be that he still lived?
Otherwise, the only other possibility was that Bai Chen lied — that Li Wuming did it, and the rest was a cover to lower the Alliance’s guard.
The answer to this question determined the Alliance’s stance toward the Great Snow Mountain. Feng Shiqi could not decide lightly, so he pressed down the doubts for now. His gaze swept the assembly. “Tell me truthfully — did any of the Ten Seats take part in this?”
At once, faces darkened. Even the normally aloof master of the Astronomy Pavilion spoke. “Punishing the Heavenly Wolf clan was Heaven’s decree. Even if we identified the swordsman, he should be honored with a monument and treated as a righteous hero. Why conceal it?”
“Even if that man is Li Wuming?”
The master of Astronomy Pavilion practiced star-reading, believing all was fated, and rarely spoke on disputes. Yet now he shook his head. “It is not the same. Li Wuming was bewitched by a fox demon, living only for that fox spirit. He no longer counts as a righteous cultivator.”
Astrologers were almost recluses, yet even he admitted Bai Chen’s reputation was ruined in the human world. The Alliance’s attitude toward the Great Snow Mountain was anything but friendly.
Naturally, clearing his name was the fox’s problem, not Feng Shiqi’s. He was not one to play the good man. He only gave a mild warning: “I hope none of you meddled in this. My temper is bad — if I find anyone acted alone, don’t blame me for being merciless.”
His voice was calm, but it chilled every heart. Bai Hangshou, seeing that Feng Shiqi had already decided, quickly shifted the topic. “Alliance Leader, the yao entered human lands with the tokens of the Hidden Wisdom Sect, the Unknown Truth Sect, and the Myriad Treasures Hall. They are now in Dongling City. That is far more important than the Heavenly Wolf clan.”
Their arrival had not been agreed upon by the Alliance. Bai Chen had come alone with three sect tokens. This was a clear breach of rules. Lin Xuan immediately grew uneasy and explained, “My son only gave the token to invite the Nine-tailed White Fox for a private meeting. Who knew he would bring the whole Great Snow Mountain clan? You cannot blame my Myriad Treasures Hall.”
Ever mercantile, the Myriad Treasures Hall would never admit dealings with the yao. Bai Hangshou only smiled. “The Nine-tailed Fox is breathtaking. For a young man to lose control for a moment is understandable.”
At this, the Oil Seller couldn’t stay quiet. He sneered at Lin Xuan. “Your hall has long coveted yao bones. Meeting the fox isn’t just about lust, is it?”
No one dared offend the Unknown Truth Sect, and the Hidden Wisdom Sect’s prestige was too high. That left the Myriad Treasures Hall as the perfect scapegoat. Lin Xuan knew his sect’s position as second seat was coveted. His temper frayed when the matter was dragged into the open, and he lashed out, pointing at the Oil Seller. “Old fool! He’s just using you as a gun, and you can’t even see it?”
The Endless Longevity Academy was the sixth seat. Above it, the Unknown Truth Sect and Hidden Wisdom Sect were untouchable, and Little Thunderclap Temple was too mysterious to provoke. If it wanted to rise further, it had to pull down the Azure Heaven Manor or the Myriad Treasures Hall. But maintaining dignity, it couldn’t do it openly. The Wandering Immortal Alliance, always opposing it, made the perfect weapon.
No one here was simple-minded. Everyone saw through Bai Hangshou’s schemes, yet they ignored it. Still, the Hidden Wisdom Sect cared for the people. Bu Tiange spoke seriously. “High-level yao with five hundred years of cultivation rival tribulation-stage cultivators. Over thirty have come this time, including the unfathomable Nine-tailed Fox and the Sword Immortal’s heir. If conflict breaks out, casualties will be heavy.”
Lin Xuan seized the chance to escape the quarrel, nodding eagerly. “Dongling City is home to tens of thousands, surrounded by prosperous towns. We cannot risk battle here. Since we cannot fight, we should welcome the new Yao King and hear what he has to say.”
Opening trade with the yao would benefit the Myriad Treasures Hall most. Even in his urgency, Lin Xuan thought of profit. But the Oil Seller coldly retorted, “These cities were built to defend against yao, a legacy since the Chang’an tribes five thousand years ago. Never has humanity invited yao into its walls. This old man won’t commit such shame. Whoever that fox’s lover is can do it.”
Who dared bear the guilt of betraying the ancestors? Yao were wild and unruly. If those bear yao caused trouble, whoever welcomed them would take the blame. No one wanted such a thankless task. Silence filled the hall. Lin Xuan grew desperate and glared at the meddler. “The scholar hasn’t spoken — why are you picking on me?”
The Alliance’s master of argument, the Oil Seller, looked perfectly justified. “I’m a poor man. You’re a rich merchant. Do I need a reason to dislike you?”
“You… I have no reply to that.” The Wandering Immortal Alliance was unmatched at stirring chaos. Lin Xuan could only sit in frustration.
Though Lin Xuan stepped back, Bu Tiange did not ignore the slander. Rumors had spread of him and the Nine-tailed Fox, and as one who swore lifelong celibacy, he had bottled his anger. At the word “lover,” he burst out. “Who are you insinuating?”
Though young, Bu Tiange was composed. Bai Hangshou had never seen him so agitated, and seized the chance to fan the flames, rebuking the Oil Seller. “The Hidden Wisdom Sect descends from the Dao Ancestor. Watch your words.”
The Oil Seller, easily provoked, only escalated. “Sword Lord and Demon Lord were once Dao companions. The previous headmaster went north with the Demon Leader [Demon sect master #3]. Your sect has a tradition of feeding demons with your bodies. If Headmaster Bu fancies the Nine-tailed Fox, just admit it. We wouldn’t be surprised.”
That was an attack on the Hidden Wisdom Sect’s foundation. Bu Tiange rose to his feet. “You claim I shield the yao for private feelings?”
“Isn’t it so? After one meeting you traveled together. You gave Yonggu Mountain, a spiritual vein birthing spirits, to him. That’s a grand gesture for a sect master.”
This was the root of the rumors. No one cared for the truth. The world only knew the sect had given the Nine-tailed Fox a mountain and still guarded it. What else could it mean but love?
The Oil Seller knew the truth but seemed intent on enraging Bu Tiange. He kept mocking. “Pity he already has a man. If you want to fight Li Wuming for her, be careful your sect doesn’t follow the Heavenly Wolves’ fate.”
“You want to die!”
“I’m a common old man, my words are rough. Don’t be offended, Headmaster Bu.”
Bu Tiange could no longer hold back. The Oil Seller never intended to retreat. Sword and wine jug clashed, and for the 101st time the Bu Kang Pavilion’s round table shattered under the pressure of true qi.
Luckily, Feng Shiqi was prepared. Though the table died, the dishes floated in midair. He popped a mung bean cake into his mouth and sighed, “Good thing I inscribed a suspension spell on the plates. The suckling pig won’t go to waste.”
The others were used to such scenes. As Bu Tiange and the Oil Seller battled in the air, the sect masters sat calmly. Even Lin Xuan only muttered to Feng Shiqi, “Alliance Leader, they’re fighting and you care only about food?”
“You’re right. Food alone won’t do.”
Feng Shiqi grew solemn, then called to the door, “Old Li, bring out the out-of-season melons. We’ll eat while we watch.”
The Oil Seller was a Wandering Immortal, Bu Tiange a sect master with treasures. Neither could kill the other. Feng Shiqi only treated it as entertainment. Seeing this, Bai Hangshou finally intervened. “Alliance Leader, without the Unknown Truth Sect’s approval, neither the Myriad Treasures Hall nor the Hidden Wisdom Sect could have brought yao past the Yinrong defenses. Now you sit idle — is that proper?”
“A hundred yao or so. Busi can house them.”
Feng Shiqi’s decision was clear — the new Yao King would be received. But he did not want to personally welcome them, lest it seem too friendly. That would make it awkward to extort them later.
He shifted the burden. “Bai Chen is in the spotlight. Whoever greets him may be called his lover next. None of you want to risk it, and I don’t want to flatter them. Let’s settle it by strength — draw lots.” [Poor Bai Chen. His reputation is at rock bottom,]
Lin Xuan, with wife and children, dreaded scandal. “You call that strength?”
Feng Shiqi was shameless. “Luck is the key to success.”
He looked ready to draw lots. Bai Hangshou, sure that the Alliance Leader would exclude his own sect, quickly protested. “Alliance Leader, Yonggu Mountain was under Azure Heaven Manor’s jurisdiction. To give it away so lightly — shouldn’t there be an explanation?”
He avoided the yao but pushed the Azure Heaven Manor forward. A clever move. But Feng Shiqi was used to handling Qiu Xiaohan. He said bluntly, “One yao core and one yao bone. How about it?”
True to his practical nature, Qiu Xiaohan didn’t argue about the sale. He bargained. “If you want the mountain and the mountain god, add more.”
Yonggu Mountain’s greatest value was its Mountain God Luo. Refusal was natural. Feng Shiqi, recalling his promise to Bai Chen, pressed with authority. “I promised Bai Chen the mountain with everything on it. Are you denying me face?”
Qiu Xiaohan didn’t even blink. “No.”
Indeed, Feng Shiqi’s antics had stripped him of dignity long ago. Still, his bluntness startled the others. But Feng Shiqi was unpredictable. He only laughed. “When he comes, you can negotiate with the fox yourself.”
“Fine.”
Qiu Xiaohan agreed, removing Azure Heaven Manor as an obstacle. Bai Hangshou sighed and resigned himself. “If we must welcome them, what then? Alliance Leader, you must give guidance.”
How much to offer was a real concern. Feng Shiqi would not admit his deal with Bai Chen. He waved it off. “Do nothing. Lin’an City has fine views and rich foods. Let them eat, drink, and wander.”
“The Nine-tailed Fox crossed half the world for this?” Bai Hangshou frowned. He clearly did not believe it.
The man was too meddlesome. If he learned the yao were entering the Unknown Truth Sect, he’d nag Feng Shiqi endlessly. Feng Shiqi had no taste for self-torment. He teased Qiu Xiaohan instead. “Perhaps he fancies a handsome young man and came for a midnight tryst. Master Qiu, a good-looking but disabled man like you is in danger.”
But jokes were wasted on Qiu Xiaohan. He only lifted his eyes and spoke three shocking words. “I’m eunuch.”
For a man to say that in public took rare boldness. Even Feng Shiqi could only admire. “Good. Truly the fiercest of our alliance. I respect you.”
His words left the assembly shaken. Lin Xuan was first to recover. “So… who will deal with the Nine-tailed Fox?”
Feng Shiqi’s resolve was firm. Bai Hangshou knew resistance was useless. To avoid trouble falling on him, he suggested quickly, “Dealing with the Nine-tailed Fox easily invites scandal. Better to send a safer sect.”
“A eunuch?” Feng Shiqi pointed at Qiu Xiaohan.
Bai Hangshou twitched, but kept his composure. “Women.”
The foxes of the Great Snow Mountain were known cut-sleeves. In today’s cultivation world, it was no secret. Only women could interact with them without rumors. Naturally, that meant the Illusory Moon Villa. Yue Xingshi had been impatient all along. She answered decisively. “Since it was my son who invited them, it makes sense for Illusory Moon Villa to send disciples.”
With her agreement, the male sect masters relaxed, and even Bu Tiange calmed after his fight. Feng Shiqi smiled meaningfully at Bai Hangshou. “Truly cunning, scholar. If all your schemes were for humanity alone, how wonderful it would be.”
His words carried barbs, but Bai Hangshou ignored them. He only asked, “Alliance Leader, you truly have no ties with the Nine-tailed Fox?”
“Survival of the fittest. What ties?”
Feng Shiqi brushed it aside with a laugh, giving no chance for more questions. He declared the meeting over. “Your souls are already bewitched by foxes. We’ll get nowhere today. Dismissed. Go see that fox with your own eyes, and think carefully on what must be done in the future.”
